Who is IndigNation?

PRESENT

IndigNation envisions a world in which every LGBTQ person can live the fullest life of their imagination, form and access multiple queer and allied communities which acknowledge and collaborate with each other.

IndigNation’s mission is to activate the queer imagination, to bring together Singapore’s diverse queer communities together in real space to exchange ideas, share knowledge and cultivate compassion for each other. Through this, progressive queer discourse can be articulated to enable progressive action.

HISTORY

IndigNation was created by People Like Us (PLU) as a series of LGBT-themed events that focused on intellectual, cultural, and artistic discussions rather than large-scale parties. This was intentionally different from the popular Nation gay dance parties, which were banned in 2005.

After the government linked rising HIV infection rates to these parties and began portraying them negatively, there was concern that public attitudes toward the LGBT community could become more hostile. In response, IndigNation aimed to:

  • Boost morale within the LGBT community.

  • Showcase the community's intellectual, cultural, and artistic contributions.

  • Challenge the stereotype that LGBT individuals were only interested in partying.

  • Foster better understanding and acceptance within mainstream Singaporean society.
